When traveling with kids the accommodation usually represents a large slice out of the budget. With small kids you can opt for a family room: in the post Family room at the best rate you can read how to score the best deal. But once the children get a bit older, it’s no longer obvious to share a hotel room. Sometimes the (bath)room simply can’t accommodate an entire family because family rooms are not available in every property. In that case you can either turn to another hotel or to book a second (connecting) room in the preferred property. Are you planning on booking such an arrangement for your upcoming family vacation? Then following tips on scoring a discount on the second room might just save you a considerable amount of money!
Don’t assume to find this kind of room arrangement through an online booking site, you won’t. It will cost you some more energy researching but the CosmopoliClan considers this well worth the effort.
Avoid booking engines
Don’t get us wrong: if you are booking an individual room then booking engines are a fine choice, especially if you’re looking for a single or double room. But don’t make the mistake of booking a 2-room family arrangement at the full rate. Different arrangements are available, you just won’t find them there.
Do your research
Do you prefer to stay in a specific hotel that is part of a hotel group? Then go take a look at the offers on this group’s website. Many chains tend to offer a discount on the second room to meet the wishes of families with children. On the Starwood hotels & resorts website for example, where you can find the W, St. Regis, Aloft, Designhotels, Sheraton & Four Points properties, we found the ‘Are we there yet’ offer with code FMPKG50.
Take into account that the offer is only applied to the standard rate and not to a reduced one. And the trick with Starwood is also that this discount is only applied at check-in and not at the time of booking. You can find the conditions (valid at the time of writing this post) in this screenshot.
Now this kind of discount codes are usually well hidden between all offers of a hotel group, one of its brands or even of a specific hotel page. Therefore it took me a while to find ‘Are we there yet’ offer too but eventually I came accross this one on the offer page of the Sheraton brand when checking the ‘family’ box.
Once you find such an offer code you can try it on the booking page of every individual hotel. Then you’re ready to get that your Starwood discount!
Contact the hotel
Doesn’t the hotel of your choice offer such a discount? Then contact that hotel directly and explain that you would like to take your family there but that you can’t seem to find a suitable arrangement. Urge them to demonstrate their family friendliness. Then specifically ask for a 50% discount on the second room. The CosmopoliClan has done this several times, so far always resulting in a positive outcome. Have a look at this e-mail of the Front Office Manager of an Egyptian hotel. Note: This hotel is no longer part of the IHG group now.
Enjoy your discount on the second room
These tips give you all the tools you need to find the best second room deals out there. Now go score that discount and go book that next vacation with the kids!
