Paris is divided into 20 administrative districts called arrondissements. When you look at the map of Paris, you’ll notice how the Paris arrondissements are numbered in the order of a clockwise spiral. Each of the areas is known by its number as well as by its name. And if you’re not sure in which arrondissement an address is located, you can deduce it from the postal code: 75001 for the first arrondissement, 75002 for the second, and so on.

Since July 2020, the smallest arrondissements (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) have fused to officially form the Paris Centre.

Another important way to identify an area to stay in Paris is relative to the Seine River. The Left Bank or Rive Gauche comprises the 5th, 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, and 15th arrondissements. All other arrondissements, including the islands île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis, are part of the Right Bank or Rive Droite.

We highlight 7 arrondissements that we believe to be the best places to stay in Paris. In addition, we also list the best hotels and apartments in each of the arrondissements mentioned.

Do take into account that, no matter where you choose to stay in Paris, not all must-sees will be located within walking distance. Therefore, it’s always recommended to stay near a metro station. This map of all metro lines in Paris will come in handy.

Map highlighting the Louvre arrondissement in Paris as one of the preferred places where to stay in Paris

The classy and elegant 1st arrondissement is the best area to stay in Paris for sightseeing and shopping.

It has the most central location of all neighborhoods in Paris. The 1st arrondissement is well-serviced by public transportation but also very walkable. Even though this area is popular with tourists, there are still plenty of places that aren’t too crowded.

This is also one of the oldest neighborhoods in Paris and once upon a time, it was home to the French royal residence. To this day, the First has an alluring appeal and it’s dotted with some of the most prestigious hotels in Paris.

Hôtel-de-Ville (Le Marais South) – 4th arrondisssement: Enchanting and bustling

Map highlighting the Marais arrondissement in Paris as a preferred place to stay in Paris

The Marais neighborhood in Paris encompasses both the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. It’s especially the southern part of Le Marais, the one located in the 4th arrondissement and south of the Rue des Archives, that makes for a wonderful place to stay in Paris. It includes the main part of the ÃŽle de la Cité, the one that includes the Notre Dame cathedral, and the ÃŽle Saint-Louis.

Le Marais literally means The Marsh and refers to the marshland on which this neighborhood in Paris was built. The state of the soil was exactly the reason why it wasn’t included in Haussmann’s renovation of Paris in the 19th century. So, essentially, it’s thanks to its marshy conditions that Le Marais’ charming characteristics, such as the cobbled streets and picturesque architecture, can be admired today.

Even though the 4th arrondissement is quite compact, there’s a lot to experience and it appeals to both romantics and party people. It’s also Paris’ gay district so you might spot a rainbow flag here and there.

If you’re looking for picture-perfect cobblestone streets, small Parisian cafés, and cute boutiques, then Le Marais is where to stay in Paris. The tranquil ÃŽle Saint-Louis, the charming Parisian streets such as the Rue des Barres and the Rue des Rosiers, and the stately Places des Vosges are truly photogenic and convivial.

Le Marais is also known to be the best neighborhood to stay in Paris for nightlife. Especially the westernmost area of the 4th arrondissement, the streets around the Centre Pompidou, are the place to be to drink and dance the night away.

Welcome to the oldest neighborhood in Paris, the Quartier Latin. This is the intellectual heart of Paris, home to the famous La Sorbonne University and other reputable educational institutions. Throughout the Middle Ages, all classes were taught in Latin. Hence, the name.

It was here that, long before the Middle Ages, the Romans founded Lutetia. The center of this Roman city was the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, atop of which the Pantheon is now located, and the Rue Saint-Jacques was the main street.

It’s a lively area, thanks to the many students that reside at the Latin Quarter. With an array of wine bars, cheese shops, restaurants and cafés dotting the street, there’s always something to experience.

Map highlighting the Saint Germain des Pres arrondissement in Paris as a preferred place to stay in Paris

Located across the Seine river from the 1st arrondissement, lies another chic area of Paris. Stately residential buildings, upscale boutiques, antique shops and specialty food stores line the streets.

It’s also home to the lovely Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, which became the intellectual hub of Paris after World War II. World-renowned painters, musicians, writers and philosophers – Oscar Wilden, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Paul Verlaine and George Sand to name a few – gathered at some of the literary cafés dot the streets. Several of these iconic institutions are still in business. No better place to have a coffee while people-watching.

The 6th arrondissement is the most expensive area of Paris. It’s super close to all landmarks but doesn’t feel as rushed as some of the other arrondissements. This is where to stay in Paris for a quintessentially Parisian experience in a sophisticated atmosphere.

Map highlighting the Eiffel tower arrondissement in Paris as a preferred place to stay in Paris

The 7th arrondissement of Paris is elegant, just like the 1st, and the streets are lined with elegant residential buildings. It’s not only home to the number one Paris landmark, the Eiffel Tower, but jam-packed with many more Paris must-sees.

Many travel sites recommend the direct Eiffel Tower area as the best place to stay in Paris. We actually disagree. Since the Eiffel Tower is the westernmost attraction in Paris, you’ll be far away from all other sights. So, where to stay in Paris’ 7th arrondissement? In our opinion, the direct vicinity of the Orsay Museum on the left bank is a much better location to stay in Paris.

This area of Paris is all about culture, with a wide array of fascinating museums to choose from.

Opéra – 9th arrondissement: Fashionable and cultural

Map highlighting the Opera arrondissement in Paris as one of the best places to stay in Paris

This area of Paris is the one of the Grand Boulevards, making it one of the best-connected arrondissements in Paris. It’s also focused on theatre with Palais Garnier, Paris’ most opulent opera house, as its crown jewel.

Shopaholics, rejoice! The 9th arrondissement is home to two of the most iconic department stores in Paris: Galéries Lafayette and Printemps, making it the best neighborhood in Paris for some serious retail therapy. Shops of a different kind can be found north of the opera house.

The South-Pigalle or SoPi neighborhood, a former red-light district turned hipster haven located in the northern part of the 9th arrondissement, is where to find the newest homegrown fashion designer boutiques and concept stores.

This arrondissement is also home to a dazzling number of bakeries, cafés, restaurants, and delis.

We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this area for a first trip to Paris. But if you’ve been to the City of Light before and are looking for a more artistic vibe rather than a classic experience, then this is where to stay in Paris.

Opéra is one of the best places to stay in Paris for shopping and culture. Here’s our personal selection of best hotels in the 9th arrondissement.

Luxury hotel: Maison Albar Hotels, le Vendôme

Honestly, it was a tie between this one and the iconic InterContinental Paris Le Grand. But, at least until that last one has finished its renovations, we’d recommend the Maison Albar. This upscale boutique hotel features bright and elegant rooms, an enchanting terrace, and an intimate wellness area. It’s the perfect place for a pleasant stay in Paris.

Mid-range hotel: Chouchou Hotel

With a name like Chouchou, which translates as darling or sweetheart, it’s hard to resist this hotel. And when you see the charming facade, you’ll be totally in love. It’s the most enchanting facade in all of Paris, in our opinion. The interior is just as unique as the exterior, with an irresistible food market, a hip bar, and even a live stage. This is where to stay in Paris if you’re looking for a creative hotel slash socializing hub in a creative and one-of-a-kind setting.

Budget hotel: Maxim Folies

This stylish 3-star hotel is a charming place to spend the night. The decor is cozy and homely, with warm and colorful touches. Maxime Folies also offers junior suites at a very affordable rate. This certainly makes for a budget-friendly option for families traveling with kids. In addition to the well-appointed rooms, there’s an intimate breakfast area with a mouth-watering selection of fresh foods, pastries, and more. Visiting Paris on a budget never looked so good.

2-bedroom apartments: Joro Living

These stylish guest accommodations must be one of the best places to stay in Paris near Palais Garnier. The apartments are spacious, cozy, newly renovated, and equipped with high-end appliances, furniture and hotel-like amenities.

Butte-Montmartre – 18th arrondissement: Affordable and artistic

Map highlighting the Montmartre arrondissement in Paris as a preferred place to stay in Paris

One of the most romantic places to stay in Paris is Montmartre. Even though it’s quite touristy, it’s one of the places you just can’t miss on your trip to Paris.

Montmartre is the name of the hill (butte in French) that gave its name to the 18th arrondissement. The most eye-catching focal point of this area is the Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart) Basilica that sits on top of the hill.

During The Belle Époque, in the second half of the 19th century, the low cost of living in this Parisian village started to attract artists looking for affordable ateliers. Soon, Montmartre became a true creative hub and the cradle of impressionism thanks to painters such as Matisse, Degas, Picasso, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, and many more.

The new-found love for life and beauty resulted in a decadent nightlife in bohemian Montmartre. Cafés and brothels lined the streets and the Moulin Rouge became the new place to be.

The red-light district is now limited to a few blocks south of the Moulin Rouge on the Boulevard de Clichy, mainly the stretch between the Pigalle Square and the Place de Clichy. If you stay just north of the metro stops Anvers and Abbesses, where the main tourist attractions of Montmartre are located, you’ll hardly even notice it.

Up on the hill, there’s a maze of narrow cobbled streets. Plenty of charming cafés and bistros can be found there. The magnetic attraction of Montmartre is still very much alive.

  • Have your portrait painted at the Place du Tertre.
  • Visit the Montmartre Museum.
  • Declare your love in hundreds of languages at the Mur des Je t’Aime or the I Love You Wall near the convivial Place des Abbesses.
  • Admire the vineyard of Le Clos Montmartre, which is over a thousand years old. You can’t enter but you can see it from behind the fence.

  • Check out the photogenic Place Dalida, named after the French singer and actress.

Pros and cons of staying in the 18th arrondissement

Pros:

  • Montmartre is a very affordable area to stay in Paris.
  • Walking the streets of the 18th arrondissement counts as an efficient work-out. No need to hit the gym!

Cons:

  • It’s far away from the other Parisian landmarks and walking is hardly an option. You’ll have to take a subway so in this arrondissement especially, it’s essential to stay near a metro station.
  • The Montmartre area is located up on a hill and has many cobbled streets. It’s not an easy neighborhood to explore for persons with reduced mobility or for parents with a stroller.

Luxury hotel: Maison Souquet

This boutique hotel, housed in a former brothel, perfectly captures the unique soul of Montmartre. It’s one of the best luxury hotels in Paris for romance. Maison Souquet evokes sensuality, from the red lanterns at the entrance to the velvet accents and the seductive paintings in the rooms. In any other part of Paris, this hotel could easily be out of place. But in Montmartre, it’s just spot-on.

Mid-range hotel: Hôtel Monsieur Aristide

This bohemian 4-star hotel is centered around its secret garden, which brings together both hotel guests and local residents. It’s been designed with sustainability in mind as most of the materials and decorations are repurposed items. This results in an eclectic style that breathes serenity. The rooms are spacious and come in various forms, from garden suites to duplex units, perfect for families planning a stay in Paris.

Budget hotel: Maison Barbès

FAQ about where to stay in Paris

How to choose which arrondissement to stay in Paris?

Your length of stay and itinerary are the basis for choosing which arrondissement to stay in Paris. You can never go wrong by staying at a central location close to the Seine Rivier.

Which arrondissement is best to stay in Paris for the first time?

Staying somewhere central will allow you to make the most of your time in Paris. That makes the 1st, 4th and 5th arrondissements perfect for a first-time visit. Even better if the accommodation of your choice is located near the Seine River. This allows for easy access to all Paris landmarks.

What’s the best area to stay in Paris for families with kids?

The 1st arrondissement is very central but also on the expensive side, especially when it comes to family rooms. The 2nd arrondissement makes for a good alternative. But we especially love the 4th and 5th arrondissements for a stay in Pairs with kids most because they’re lively yet cozy in some way without compromising on location. Just make sure to choose a hotel or apartment not too far away from the Seine to be close to the action. Feel free to check out our selection of family hotels in Paris.

What’s the most romantic area to stay in Paris?

Both the 6th (Saint-Germain-des-Prés) and the 18th (Montmartre) arrondissments are perfect for couples staying in Paris. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is more of a residential area with many cute restaurants, boutiques, and some lovely squares. Montmartre features meandering cobbled streets and enchanting corners.

What’s the most expensive area to stay in Paris?

Because of their prime location, the 1st, 6th, and 7th arrondissements are the most expensive areas to stay in Paris for tourists.

What’s the most affordable area to stay in Paris?

The 9th and 18th arrondissements are among the cheapest places to stay in Paris. Yet, they are located near some of the main Paris attractions. You can still walk to the center from the 9th but have to take the metro if you’re staying in Paris’ 18th arrondissement.
Even though we don’t mention it in this guide about the most popular places to stay in Paris, the 10th arrondissement, which includes the romantic Canal St-Martin, is also a really nice area.

What is the most walkable area to stay in Paris?

Pretty much all Paris arrondissements mentioned in this article are walkable. Montmartre is the only exception to the rule since it’s located on a hill. It also features a maze of cobbled streets that can make it harder to orientate. Just be sure not to wander off to far south, because then you may accidently end up in the red-light district.
